Monday: The day voted most likely to make you want to stay in bed
Moxie: Confidence, determination, force of character
Monday Moxie: A tiny spark of “Go get ‘em!” curated by yours truly to help you get your day (even a Monday) off to a good start
It’s still Women’s History Month, right? I mean, that’s still a thing, right? Are women still a thing?
It’s hard to tell these days.
It seems like every day I wake up to a fresh batch of hellish headlines about how the current White House regime is erasing anyone who is not a white, Christian, CIS-gendered man from real life (by removing them from leadership positions, or any position at all) and from history (by deleting web pages, covering up plaques, and other petty nonsense.)
It’s a little ironic that so many of these egregious attacks on women’s contributions have taken place during the month meant to honor exactly those contributions. WTAF.
I won’t go on and on, but — if you’re interested — there’s an excellent and thorough NPR article that includes screen grabs of archived government site web pages juxtaposed with the new versions that have been “revised or removed to align with the President’s executive orders.” 🤮
ANYway …
This is Monday Moxie. It’s meant to help you start the week off on a positive note, right? Right!
So here is a fun, groovy little song dedicated to all the women out there who are rediscovering their wild selves in the midst of all this crisis and chaos.
In a 2020 interview with Vinyl Me Please, the artist — Your Smith — had this to say about freedom and success:
“To me, happiness really lies in being able to be your most authentic self. It feels really good right now to … have the focus of this phase of my life be about honesty and happiness and redefining what success is to me.”
Authentic.
Honest.
Happy.
Successful.
That doesn’t seem like a lot to ask for, but in this moment it can feel really far away. But remember: You are a wild, wild woman. You may not realize it yet, but she’s in there. All you have to do is let her out. If not now, when?
Wild Wild Woman
Your Smith, 2019 Single
In the wind of the night, in the light by the bed
I hear a voice calling me, calling me back
I barely hear it, like my head's in a bath
I hear a voice calling me, calling me back
I tried to leave her hiding, all strung up
I tried to keep her quiet, but she's screaming inside of me
I tried to keep her hiding, all shut up
I tried to keep her quiet
But she's a wild, wild woman (oh-oh-oh-oh)
She's a wild, wild woman (oh-oh-oh-oh)
She's a wild, wild woman
In a way, I just know I've seen her before
She carried me home in a '94 Civic
Her face draws a line as a way to get home
I hear her voice calling me, calling me back
I tried to leave her hiding, all strung up
I tried to keep her quiet, but she's screaming inside of me
I tried to keep her hiding, all shut up
I tried to keep her quiet
But she's a wild, wild woman (oh-oh-oh-oh)
She's a wild, wild woman (oh-oh-oh-oh)
She's a wild, wild woman (oh-oh-oh-oh)
She's a wild, wild woman (oh-oh-oh-oh)
She's a wild, wild woman
Don't go skimming your pockets
Or hide what you wanted
It's a waste of your goddamned design
Don't keep fighting
No use in running from what you're becoming
Don't keep it inside
She's a wild, wild woman
I tried to leave her hiding, all strung up
I tried to keep her quiet, but she's screaming inside of me
I tried to keep her hiding, all shut up
I tried to keep her quiet
But she's a wild, wild woman (oh-oh-oh-oh)
She's a wild, wild woman (oh-oh-oh-oh)
She's a wild, wild woman (oh-oh-oh-oh)
I'm telling you
She's a wild, wild woman
Oh-oh, oh-oh, oh
She's a wild, wild woman (oh-oh)
(oh-oh)

What I love most about these nudges, these reminders of the inner power and unlimited wildness we possess is the honoring of what we know lives underneath even when it is deliberated, devalued, and destroyed at the highest levels. That knowing, that collective fire that cannot be contained, these posts purse the lips of each woman reading and call them to blow. Oxygen to fuel the fire.
Jamie, your message of empowerment is so important right now. It's easy to feel overwhelmed and defeated by the constant barrage of negativity, but you remind us that we have the power within us to rise above it. That "tiny spark of 'Go get 'em!'" is exactly what we need to keep going. It's a reminder that we're not helpless victims, but active agents in our own lives. We have the strength, the resilience, and the "Monday Moxie" to face whatever comes our way. Thank you for the encouragement and for reminding us to let our "wild women" shine.
