Monday Moxie — Someday soon, your whole life’s gonna change
And then you’ll miss the magic of the good, old days
As Ferris Bueller said, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” That was one of the quotes I chose to put next to my senior portrait in my high school yearbook, and I stand by it today.
The idea of “living in the moment” is not a new one. I know.
But it is one worth revisiting. Often.
Hence, this week’s Monday Moxie pick: “Good Old Days,” by Macklemore, featuring Kesha.
This song was a serendipitous find, given that I’m not a huge fan of either artist.
I know Kesha from her 2010 hit, “We R Who We R,” which was on the playlist for my daughter’s seventh birthday party. And — yes — I realize in hindsight that might have been slightly inappropriate.
My beau and I saw Macklemore open for Imagine Dragons when they played Fenway Park in the summer of ’22. I knew next to nothing about him, but ended up loving his energy and upbeat, inclusive vibe.
The pairing of these two artists may not be the most memorable duo of all time, but I love the fact that, based on recording lore, their collaboration came together in the spur of the moment, mirroring the song’s message of being present and tuned in to what’s happening in the now.
Apparently, Kesha was in Seattle, enjoying a day off, when Macklemore invited her to an impromptu session at the studio. In an interview quoted in Billboard magazine, Macklemore said, “I talked her into coming into the studio. We made [the song] in a couple hours.”
Nice job.
I chose this song for Monday Moxie because it made me feel something. It made me think about days gone by that I maybe didn’t appreciate as deeply as I should have. Some of the lyrics also speak to the regret that lives in our hearts long, long after we’ve made the mistake of letting fear dictate our choices. Also, Kesha’s part is in exactly the right key for me to sing along with gusto, so that’s fun.
I hope you enjoy the song and I hope it helps start your week off on a positive — if reflective and maybe even nostalgic — note.

Good Old Days
Macklemore (feat. Kesha), 2017 — Track 6 on the album Gemini)
I wish somebody would have told me babe
Some day, these will be the good old days
All the love you won't forget
And all these reckless nights you won't regret
Someday soon, your whole life's gonna change
You'll miss the magic of these good old days
.
I was thinking about the band
I was thinking about the fans
We were underground
Loaded merch in that 12-passenger van
In a small club in Minnesota
And the snow outside of 1st Ave
I just wanted my name in a star
Now look at where we at
Still growing up, still growing up
I'd be laying in my bed and dream about what I'd become
Couldn't wait to get older, couldn't wait to be someone
Now that I'm here, wishing I was still young
Those good old days
.
I wish somebody would have told me babe
That some day, these will be the good old days
All the love you won't forget
And all these reckless nights you won't regret
'Cause someday soon, your whole life's gonna change
You'll miss the magic of the good old days
.
Wish I didn't think I had the answers
Wish I didn't drink all of that glass first
Wish I made it to homecoming
Got up the courage to ask her
Wish I would've gotten out of my shell
Wish I put the bottle back on that shelf
Wish I wouldn't have worry about what other people thought
And felt comfortable in myself
Rooftop open and the stars above
Moment frozen, sneaking out, and falling in love
Me, you and that futon, we'd just begun
On the grass, dreaming, figuring out who I was
Those good old days
.
I wish somebody would have told me babe
That some day, these will be the good old days
All the love you won't forget
And all these reckless nights you won't regret
'Cause someday soon, your whole life's gonna change
You'll miss the magic of the good old days
.
Never thought we'd get old, maybe we're still young
Maybe we always look back and think it was better than it was
Maybe these are the moments
Maybe I've been missing what it's about
Been scared of the future, thinking about the past
While missing out on now
We've come so far, I guess I'm proud
And I ain't worried about the wrinkles around my smile
I've got some scars, I've been around
I've felt some pain, I've seen some things, but I'm here now
Those good old days
.
You don't know, what you've got
Till it goes, till it's gone
You don't know, what you've got
Till it goes, till it's gone
.
I wish somebody would have told me babe
Some day, these will be the good old days
All the love you won't forget
And all these reckless nights you won't regret
Someday soon, your whole life's gonna change
You'll miss the magic of these good old days

I did enjoy this song - and I really like Kesha's raspy voice. When my daughter was young, I think primary school, that thrift shop song was a big hit, all the kids were singing it. I do very much have the sense that we are living in the good ol days. That became very clear to me when the pandemic started, the sense that life was never going to be the same, and I think that has continued for many. So yes, a really nice acknowledgement to embrace the sweetness of life still here. Adding this one to my spotify liked songs too. Thank you :-)
Really didn't know about either artist. Don't love the music but do love the sentiment of the song!
